Why the is $#8! my electric bill so high?
Without impugning your lifestyle (that basement iguana farm is your business), your electricity costs, and hence your bill, are a product of two factors: how much power you use (your usage, typically measured in kWh) and how much you pay for those units of power. Usage is easy – use more power, pay for more power.
Pricing is a little more complicated. If we’re being cynical (we’re working on it, we swear), incentives tell us everything: our power companies are for-profit businesses. They want to sell us as little power as possible for as much money as possible. Inversely, homeowners want to buy as much power as they need for as little as possible. Surprise, surprise, the power company usually wins. What are you going to do, buy candles and salt your own meat? Didn’t think so.
Homeowners are typically charged per kWh of electricity consumed, and understanding supply and demand helps us understand the rising costs of power. Generally speaking, when demand increases relative to supply, prices increase. Demand is increasing, and we all know why. TVs phones, tablets, air conditioning, heat pumps, electric vehicles. We’re electrifying every aspect of our lives, and our power needs are insatiable.
In the US, and especially the Northeast, supply is nowhere near keeping up with demand. Our power plants are aging and undersized, our delivery networks (the power grid) are falling apart, and the build out of renewable power sources is slower than it should be.
Between the endless delivery charges, and the litany of odd-sounding suppliers, modern energy markets are complex enough to cross your eyes and, more importantly, empty your wallet. Suffice it say, electric rates in Massachusetts have gone up 65% in the last decade (32% nationally), and with ongoing electrification of homes and transportation, ever hotter summers, volatile fossil fuel prices, and a booming Artificial Intelligence industry dependent on power hungry data centers, there appears to be no end in sight.
Wait, why am I paying so much in delivery charges?
You may be surprised to see that right around half (half!) of the cost of your electricity bill is “delivery”. Not making electricity, with power plants and fuel and new technologies (giant hamster wheels…? …with giant hamsters? …can’t be…) but just getting that electricity from wherever it’s made (more on that in a bit) to your house. In other words, poles and wires – in New England, some of the oldest poles and wires in the world. Old, crusty, dilapidated, undersized, constantly fending off trees and weather. Sounds expensive.
And that’s what our Northeast utilities do – they don’t make electricity; they just move it around on one of the biggest machines on the planet. A machine you have to use and have no say in how it’s operated. And the price goes up every year, no matter what. At the service is…okay? Why do we put up with this, again? One of America’s last great monopolies (Help us Teddy!).
We’ve seen industry experts estimate anywhere from 5-10+ trillion (with a “t”!) dollars to rebuild and modernize our power grids. Factor in ongoing maintenance (trees!), low-income subsidies, energy efficiency subsidies (use those while you can), then tack on a 12% profit for the Eversource and National Grid guys, and that’s a hefty bill we get to foot.
So, will solar save me money? How much?
Will solar save you money? WILL SOLAR SAVE YOU MONEY?!
Excellent question. Long story short…probably? Frankly, with the technology available to us now, and the horrifying economics of the only alternative (the power companies), it’s hard to see how it couldn’t. But everyone’s situation is different, and it’s possible your house is not well suited to solar energy. Built in a cave, for instance. And if that’s the case for you, then just don’t do it. But everywhere else, solar energy is now the cheapest way to generate electricity, ever.
By switching to solar energy, you not only protect yourself from rising electricity costs that you can’t control, but a pernicious, monopolistic middleman between you and your beloved…coal-fired power plant? Seriously, the grid stinks. And because there are multiple types of home solar arrangements, from straight-cash to power purchase agreements, it’s easier than ever to find a solution for your home your needs, your family.
And that’s one of the main reasons we built GroupSolarDeals. Most homeowners understand solar is the way to go, but friction abounds between an idea and execution. Complicated jargon, tricky salespeople, endless rules and regulations, and so many options. We’ll make it simple, and then we’ll get you – and your friends – a great deal, together.
Why Group Solar Deals? Shouldn't I just do it alone?
This is a tricky one. Well, not really, but we’re trying to sound magnanimous (how are we doing?).
Solar is great. A solar panel takes free, abundant sunlight and turns it into usable electricity for 25+ years, with no moving parts, no noise, no fumes, and minimal maintenance. Home solar is even better. By putting the panels on your roof (where, let’s face it, you’re not doing anything anyway), you generate power where you need it, increase the value of your home, and insulate yourself from the soul and bank-account crushing wackiness of the utility company.
Not every house is equal. Some get better sun than others. Some have more roof space than others. Some are more efficient. Some smell weird (this has nothing to do with solar, but you know what we’re talking about). This makes every home solar system a custom job – it requires evaluation, surveys, skilled labor, compliant procedures, and permits. Add to that escalating customer acquisition costs, and you’ve got a pricey proposition. Not nearly as pricey as doing nothing, but not a toaster oven either.
The age-old practice of buying in bulk (who doesn’t love Costco?) has saved money since the advent of capitalism. Grouping residential deals multiplies the buying power of any one homeowner, and helps solar scale.
With Group Solar Deals, we’re building a platform to make that process easy for everyone, so you can save thousands on home solar and start living your best electrical life.
What about community solar? Some kid at the hardware store said I should do that.
Community solar is interesting, to say the least. Decent idea, but there are…issues.
“Community solar” typically refers to any power generation schemes whereby a large, farm-sized solar installation is either crowd-funded or investor built, with the subsequent power produced sold to various customers who sign up for discounted electricity (sometimes). Now, for some people, this works out fairly well. For people who rent their homes instead of owning them, or people who live in apartment buildings without roof space, this is about as good as solar gets. And we love solar energy in all its guises, so generally speaking, the more the merrier.
But with a community solar setup, the power you’re buying still has to travel through the utility company’s power lines, and, as we’ve discussed, that’s half (or more) the cost of power! So even if some billionaire donated the solar farm and all the power it generated, you’d still be paying delivery fees that could be in the hundreds (we’ve seen ’em!).
There’s another issue. The discount from community solar is typically in the 5-10% range. 5-10% of an electric bill that will increase in cost every single year, without caps on those increases. In the last few years, New England utilities have raised rates 20%, 30% and 50%! The juice isn’t worth the squeeze, as they say in the juice squeezing business.
If community solar is your only choice, it’s better than nothing. We can even recommend a few outfits. But if you want the satisfaction and peace-of-mind of real savings, real predictability, real protection, real performance, and real independence, get in touch with us, find a group, and go solar.
How do you vet installers?
With a big magnifying glass. Well, not yet, but we are getting older…
We’re relying on our years of experience in the solar industry and have developed a comprehensive rubric for grading solar installers, vetting them for industry experience, quality control, customer services, and a host of other metrics we consider important. And we individually review each project to make sure they’re hitting our standards. If they’re in our market, they’ll do a good job, or they’ll be hearing from us.
We also rely on community engagement. If you hear something, pass it our way, and we’ll check it out. If you’ve had a good experience, share it with the group, and the process is made all the better. That’s a big part of the point of Group Solar Deals; better solar, together.
How big can a group be? Or how small?
This is a great question. Bigger isn’t always better (in home services, relax). While more homeowners usually have more buying power, larger groups can also slow down the process, and increase volatility (homeowner #73 went on vacation, everyone stop!) along the way.
Geographic proximity is also a big factor. Installing 2,000 homeowners spread across the mid-west doesn’t really simplify logistics much, so not a ton of savings there. But 300 houses in the same zip code? Now we’re talking. A 25-house development or HOA? Killer. 5 neighbors on the same block? Gorgeous.
We want Group Solar Deals to work equally well for Fortune 500 companies looking to offer the ultimate employee benefit, to the O’brien family looking for a great deal on their house, their kids’ and grandma and grandpa’s.
So we’re building a marketplace for a reason. We want homeowners and communities and installers to work together to find the best path forward, together. Our goal is solar, how we get there is up to all of you.
Will a heat pump make my electric bill more expensive?
Yes, most likely. Do it anyway.
Just kidding.
Heat pumps are remarkable (and we’re working on group deals for those too), the most efficient way to heat and cool a house. But if you currently heat your house with fossil fuels, like coal (still, in 2025?!), home heating oil, or natural gas, you may experience some sticker shock after your first full winter with heat pumps. Kicking the oil delivery man to the curb is a great first step (it’s nothing personal), and your lungs will thank you for not burning stuff, but electricity can be pricy, and heat pumps run on the stuff.
That being said, if you’re coming from simple electric resistance heaters, like baseboard or a simple electric water heater, a heat pump will be welcome relief. You can even get them in clothes dryers now!
In any event, that’s where solar comes in. If your whole life is going to run on electricity – and it definitely should, you caveman – you may as well have cheap, clean, predictable, resilient, independent power. And there’s no better way to get that power than by using GroupSolarDeals to unlock bulk discounts on your very own home solar installation.
Will an EV make my electric bill more expensive?
Only if you charge it at home, which you should, because waking up every morning to a fully fueled vehicle and never having to stop at a gas station again is, as the French say (??), sublime. High electric bills are not so fun, but, again, we’ll help you go solar, so problem solved. Sensing a theme here?
Electric vehicles run on electricity, which they get from the little holes in the wall of your garage. Depending on how much you drive, an EV can use an additional 3,000 to 4,000 kWh of power annually, on top of your refrigerator, your ac, your hot tub, and your $5,000, 20’x20′ golf simulator (your house is awesome).
We don’t currently have any group deals on electric vehicles, but as our market grows, we hope to see some options. In the meantime, if enough of you call us asking for it, we’ll do some digging.
